Serum Hexosamine Levels in Health and Disease * by Sara Weiden
نویسنده
چکیده
Hexosamine is a normal component of serum mucoprotein and its level may be regarded as an index of total mucoprotein which includes a, , and y globulins, fibrinogen, "seroglycoid," and cseromucoid." Interest in seromucoids was greatly enhanced when it was found by West and Clarke (1938) and others that in acute and chronic infections, in malignancy, and in a number of endocrine disturbances, the hexosamine and inferentially the mucoid fractions increased above the normal range. Raised serum hexosamine levels have been found in patients suffering from infection and disseminated malignant disease (West and Clarke, 1938 ; Weisbrod, 1950), in rheumatic fever (Rosenberg and Schloss, 1949; Kelley, 1952), in rheumatoid arthritis and asthma (Jimenez Diaz, Aguirre, and Arjona, 1953), and in pneumonia (Nilsson, 1937; Faber, 1948). The plasma hexosamine level also increases after extensive trauma (Schlamowitz, de Graff and Schubert, 1950; Boas and Peterman, 1953 ; West and Clarke, 1938). In this paper, a systematic study has been made of serum hexosamine levels both in normal people and in a wide range of pathological conditions, in order to determine whether the presence of a high serum hexosamine level could be used as an indication of certain pathological states.

متن کاملEffect of acute clinical stress on the levels of hexosamine in serum and its excretion in urine.
The total serum hexosamine 2 level is elevated in many unrelated chronic diseases (1, 2), and in experimental animals following acute injury (3, 4). It is not clear whether this elevation is due to increased production, diminished utilization or merely a shift of tissue hexosamines into the circulation. Since the activity of the adrenal glands is increased in many of these conditions of acute a...

Background: The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is higher in patients with psoriasis than in the normal population. Serum leptin levels are higher in patients with psoriasis and in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver. The purpose of this study was to determine the serum levels of leptin in psoriatic patients with and without non-alcoholic fatty liver.<span...

Serum sialic acid and total hexosamine values were remarkably elevated in the patients with malignant bone tumor and/or metastasis, in general, but in the great number of the patients with benign bone tumor both these levels remained within the normal range. Whereas, there were some cases with malignant bone tumor showing normal values in both serum sialic acid and total hexosamine levels, but ...
متن کاملAlterations of serum lipids in patients with classic cutaneous lichen planus
Background: Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory disease involving the skin, mucous membranes and appendages. Like other chronic inflammatory diseases, it may be associated with metabolic disorders and dyslipidemia. Due to the discrepancies in the results of previous studies and lack of a similar study on an Iranian population, we decided to investigate and compare the serum lipid...
